Markéta Vondrouová defeated favourite Ons Jabeur in the Wimbledon women’s final on Saturday, July 15, becoming the first unseeded woman to win the prestigious championship.

The world No. 42, who was playing in her second grand slam final, defeated No. 6 seed Jabeur 6-4 6-4.

Markéta Vondrousova collapsed into the grass immediately after defeating her, overwhelmed by the magnitude of her accomplishment.

A female player rated so low in the globe has not reached a Wimbledon final since Serena Williams in 2018 when the American was ranked 181. Billie Jean King was the last unseeded woman to achieve it in 1963.

“Tennis is crazy,” Vondrouová, a former junior No. 1 and runner-up at the 2019 French Open remarked on the court. “Yeah, I really don’t know what’s going on right now; it’s an incredible feeling.”

Jabeur has now lost her second Wimbledon final in a row, and she claims it is the most devastating of her career. This was her third defeat in a major final.

Jabeur would have been the first Arab and African woman to win a grand slam if she had won, but her 31 unforced mistakes lost her the match, and the wait continues.

“I’m not going to give up, I’m going to come back stronger,” she said to Centre Court, wiping away tears.

JUST IN: EPL Releases 2025/26 Season Dates, Adjusts To A 60-Hour Break For Players

The excitement surrounding the English Premier League 2025/26 season has hit a high with the official season fixtures released.

The new season, which will commence on Saturday, August 16, 2025, is expected to keep fans on their toes until the final matches on Sunday, May 24, 2026.

Considering the welfare of players, the EPL body has made a series of strategic adjustments to the holiday schedule.

A 60-hour rest break between rounds will be mandatory for the first time in history.

This first-of-its-kind move also relieves frequent concerns about the holiday jumble so players can perform to their full potential across the season.

As a further gesture to player welfare, the league also made the pre-Christmas day a non-match day. The move is expected to be embraced both by players and fans alike, with everyone feeling fully in the spirit of the holiday.

The EPL 2025/26 schedule is thoughtfully designed across 33 weekends and five-midweek rounds to provide a well-balanced and evenly distributed schedule.

Starting on August 16, the calendar includes a large recovery period of 83 days for players from the end of the 2024/25 season.

In addition, with the final day of the season set for May 24, 2026, the league has the advantage of wrapping up well before the FIFA 2026 World Cup call-up window.

This gives players enough time to prepare for the biggest event in world football, the World Cup.

Such carefully considered actions demonstrate the Premier League’s commitment to preserving competitive football and protecting player welfare.

We are fans, and we cannot wait for another season of awesome football!
