France’s Parliament Passes Bill To Protect Children From Suspected Abusive Parents

France’s parliament has passed bill to suspend parental autonomy for children under investigation for incest or domestic violence and to withdraw it if they are ultimately penalised.

The National Assembly voted on the measure on Monday, March 11, before the upper house Senate passed it on Tuesday.

Previously, the judicial system left children vulnerable or even in the hands of an alleged abuser throughout a lengthy investigation.

FMTBLOG gathered that under this new law, parents who are being investigated for alleged sexual abuse or any other crime against their kid would have all of their parental rights suspended, including the ability to care for or have their child stay with them.

The new legislation also stipulates that if a parent is found guilty of sexual abuse of their child or a crime against their child or the other parent, their rights will be revoked entirely unless the judge makes a different judgement.

In its most severe form, the parent is unaware of significant events in their child’s life.

“It is our duty to protect children who are the victims of a parent who is an abuser,” said Justice Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti.

In January, UN experts highlighted incidents in which children believed to be victims or at high risk of sexual abuse are “placed in the custody of fathers against whom the allegations are made, and mothers are penalised for child abduction for attempting to protect their children.”

According to CIIVISE, a government-created organisation for the protection of sexual abuse victims, approximately 160,000 children in France are sexually assaulted each year, and 5.5 million French people were sexually abused as children.

According to the report, men are responsible for 95% of the incidents.

Bisi further added that an average man expects to follow a predefined path of growth, which includes teenage years through university level, to get a degree and a job.

He noted that he couldn’t follow the predefined path of growth, which was why he came out to declare his sexual orientation.

Bisi Alimi further said that his making his sexual orientation public doesn’t mean he did to throw a party, but rather to shun all expected people placed on him.

”I am not coming out to spite you; I have been gay since way back; I didn’t just become gay yesterday.”
