36 state governors have allegedly rejected the federal government’s proposed ₦62,000 national minimum wage.

The governors have vowed that they would not pay less than N57,000.

According to Dockaysworld, the Federal Government has increased the national minimum salary from ₦60,000 to ₦62,000.

However, organised labour’s demand has decreased from ₦494,000 to ₦250,000.

According to a report by the Punch, the Federal Government may accept ₦65,000 as the new minimum wage. Still, governors and the business sector argue that any value beyond ₦57,000 may not be viable.

Insiders believe the governors’ main argument is that accepting a minimum salary exceeding ₦57,000 will deplete the states’ finances for developmental initiatives.

Recall that the governors stated on Friday that the Federal Government’s previous N60,000 minimum wage proposal is unsustainable and cannot be implemented.

The governors urged the tripartite committee members to reach an agreement on a minimum wage that is both fair and sustainable.

Meanwhile, organised labour may restart its statewide indefinite strike after discussions over the national minimum wage ended in a standstill yesterday.

After calling off the strike on Tuesday, Joe Ajaero, president of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), stated that if the government did not accept their demands within five days, they would restart industrial action.

Meanwhile, the Tripartite Committee on New National Minimum Wage (NNMW) has deferred its meeting.

A new source confirmed that “there was disagreement about the amount.” The government provided N62,000, but Labour has now demanded N250,000. The report will be sent to the president for further consideration.”

He noted that he couldn’t follow the predefined path of growth, which was why he came out to declare his sexual orientation.
