Amazon AI-Powered Shopping Assistant, RUFUS Goes Live
Amazon said on Friday that its AI-powered shopping assistant, Rufus, is now live in the Amazon mobile app for all U.S. users.

The assistant, which is located in the bottom right corner of the app’s main menu bar, is meant to help users find goods, compare products, and get suggestions on what to buy.
Before Friday’s launch, Rufus was only offered in test to a small group of customers in the U.S. through the Amazon mobile app. After tests with “tens of millions of questions,” Amazon now says that all U.S. shoppers can give it a try.

The AI chatbot was first introduced in February and has been trained on Amazon’s product catalog, customer reviews, community Q&As, and other public information from around the web.
However, Amazon isn’t saying which websites’ data was used to help its assistant make better suggestions or if that data came from other retail websites.

Rufus has a large language model (LLM) that is designed to handle shopping queries. This lets customers ask questions about products, such as what they should think about before buying, how they differ from other products, or how long the product lasts, based on customer reviews and expert analysis gathered from across the web.
People could ask things like, “What should I think about when I buy headphones?” “What should I think about when I clean my car at home?” “What are cosmetics that are good for you?” “What do I need to play golf in the cold?” and more. Plus, customers can chat with Rufus by telling the AI something they want to do, like: “I want to start an indoor garden.” The chatbot will then provide ideas on what to buy to achieve that job.
During tests, Amazon found that customers asked the AI questions and were also clicking on the linked questions that show in the chat window to help guide customer queries. For instance, buyers might ask Rufus, “What’s the material of the backpack?” and then tap on another question, “What do customers say?” to learn more.
Because Rufus knows more than just goods when a customer asks about a pool umbrella for Florida, Rufus shares facts about Florida’s weather, humidity, and more, Amazon says.

Adding to the product similarities, Rufus was also helpful in keeping customers up to date with things like fashion trends or the latest tech, as customers could ask what the newest model of a product was or what sort of styles were popular.

Rufus also served test customers as an assistant to help them find their past orders or learn more about when current orders are coming.
