The recently elected Chairperson of the Ogun State Chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Nurse Adejoke Bello, has urged both the state and Federal government to prioritise the needs of health professionals in order to address the issue of brain drain in the country.

Speaking to journalists in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, shortly after her election, Nurse Bello emphasized the importance of not neglecting the plight and welfare of nurses, as this contributes to the brain drain plaguing the health sector.

She specifically called on state governments to increase the employment of nurses, particularly in Ogun State, to improve healthcare accessibility

She further acknowledged the contributions made by the government in the health sector, but urged them to recognize the valuable impact nurses have in healthcare.

Bello, highlighted the brain drain as a significant challenge faced by nurses, with many seeking opportunities abroad, leaving a shortage of available nurses who are then overburdened with work.

In light of this, she appealed to both federal and state governments to employ more nurses to alleviate this strain.

Nurse Bello also emphasized the importance of nurses prioritizing their own health and maintaining a strong work ethic.

She assured all nurses in the state that she would work closely with the government and relevant stakeholders to ensure adequate manpower development and improved welfare packages.

She added her dedication to serving the best interests of the nurses and requested their support, cooperation, and prayers for a successful tenure in office.”
