Senate Authorises Death Penalty For Drug Traffickers

The Senate has authorised the death penalty as a punishment for drug dealers in the country as it advances to the third reading of the 2024 NDLEA Act (Amendment) Bill.

Senator Tahir Munguno, Chairman of the Committees on Judiciary, Human Rights & Legal Matters, and Drugs & Narcotics, adopted the proposal on Thursday when the Senate dissolved into a committee of the whole for a clause-by-clause consideration of a report of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024.

During a review of the penalty sections of the amendment bill aimed at enhancing the agency’s operations, the Senate Chief Whip and Sen. suggested an amendment to give drug offenders a death sentence rather than only a life term.

Senator Adams Oshiomhole objected to the revised clause’s quick consideration and adoption.

The Deputy Senate President rejected Senator Oshiomhole’s protest to overturn the verdict, who said that it arrived too late and violated the rules.

The upper house has begun reviewing Nigerian judicial officeholders’ wages, allowances, and fringe perks to combat bribery and corruption and guarantee the judiciary’s independence.

The executive measure, which seeks to regulate the wages of judicial office holders at federal and state levels, passed its second reading on Thursday and is intended to halt the long-standing stagnation in pay to reflect contemporary socioeconomic realities.

Even though the measure was overwhelmingly adopted, several lawmakers proposed that salaries/remuneration for Nigerians in other industries be examined similarly in light of the present economic downturn.

The measure was then forwarded to the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters, which was given four weeks to report back.

Former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd) has explained why he refused to align any political party in Nigeria.

Gowon, 90, announced on Wednesday, November 27, in Abuja while receiving the League of Northern Democrats (LND), which former Kano State governor Senator Ibrahim Shekarau leads.

The elder statesman emphasised his patriotism for Nigeria, citing his military background as a driving force for his commitment to serving the country.

“I’ve always believed in taking the best from all ideologies, be it socialism, capitalism, or others, and applying them for the greater good.

“During my time in government, we valued diverse perspectives, but decisions were always made in the interest of the people and the nation.”

The former Head of State argued that the North had to make sacrifices to alleviate fears of one region’s dominance, especially considering its size and population. He stated that the idea emerged from prolonged consultations with political leaders, chiefs, and diverse groups.

At the time, he stated widespread concern in the South about the North’s dominance, which nearly led to calls for independence from all regions—west, east, and even the North.

“If we had allowed it, what would we call ourselves today? We might have ended up with separate nations—Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, or otherwise. I hesitate to say more, as I might risk offending someone here.”

Gowon expressed sadness at the current challenges facing the North, such as the rise of groups like the Lukurawa from Mali, claiming that their activities have further exacerbated the region’s woes.
